Progressive Democrats in the 7th Congressional DistrictUpdate, June 2007I've been getting calls from PDA asking whether this chapter is active or not. I have to keep telling them no. Not that I don't think we're active, but it's that it seems we're too active. We're all too busy locally, or at the LD level, to get together as a caucus and coordinate our actions at the CD level. I know I don't have the time. If anyone is willing and able to step forward and take charge, please let me know. Oh, and it seems that the 4th CD Democrats has disbanded. At least their website is down. The form is in for the 7th CD!June 10, 2006 Ok, I've filled out the form, and we'll see where it goes. If you would like to be on the list for the 7th CD Progressive Chapter/Caucus, please let me know. Right now we are a Chapter, because the Democratic Party in Washington State is not organized formally on the CD level, with the exception of the 4th. Maybe we should change that, but let's move forward one step at a time. 7th CD PDA Chapter is launching!by Chad LupkesAs of May 20th, 2006, nobody else had signed up to become the PDA Chapter Coordinator of the 7th Congressional District of Washington, home to Rep. Jim McDermott, arguably one of the most progressive members of the US House of Representatives. So, I did. Judith Shattuck is the Washington State coordinator for PDA, and she provided me with a list of names and email addresses of those who might be interested in forming a formal PDA chapter for the 7th CD. We only need 5 names, but the more the merrier. We already have a mailing list established that you can join as well: http://lists.riseup.net/www/info/pdcwcd7 Why PDCWCD7? Because that infrastructure already exists, thanks to the work that was done last year for the PDCW. Where this goes from here depends on the response I get, and I've already gotten some people say that they are in. If you are interested, please let me know. Help continue the fight for Democratic values! Please Contribute!Still Fighting: Newt Gingrich Yesterday, Tom DeLay Today Congressman Jim McDermott is a strong Democrat, a patriot, and a champion of the First Amendment. This is why the Republicans have been after him for eight years. As both the former Chair and Ranking Member of the Ethics Committee, McDermott was intimately involved in investigating the complaints against Speaker Newt Gingrich. The investigations eventually led to Gingrich resigning from Congress. Exercising his First Amendment rights, McDermott used the press to expose Gingrich's deceptive behavior in violation of an agreement with the ethics panel. In what is now a familiar story, McDermott is the target of a coordinated Republican attack for standing up for the public good. The Republicans' weapon of choice against McDermott is a shameful and politically motivated lawsuit. Despite wins by McDermott in the District Court and in the U.S. Supreme Court, the Republican leadership continues to use the courts to pursue him. Throughout, McDermott has consistently opposed the policies of the Republican majority.
Republicans just can't take it when someone stands up to them. Newt Gingrich may be gone, but the stakes are higher with an emboldened Republican Majority led by Tom DeLay that will:
Strong Democrats like McDermott are the best check on a government where the power of Republican one-party rule has been abused time and again. We cannot allow Republican leaders to financially destroy a Member of Congress who has a proven track record of standing up for endangered democratic values like: social security, a woman's right to chose, health care, and civil liberties. We must make a statement now with our donations so that Tom DeLay and right-wing conservatives feel nothing short of immovable resistance to their blatant attempts to silence those who dare to speak out. Your online contribution today will give McDermott the ability to continue to fight and hold the Bush/Cheney administration accountable. Thank you, Friends for Jim McDermott Click here to contribute!
